INEC Office On Fire In Anambra

The office of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, in Awka, the Anambra State capital is currently on fire.

The media observes that helpless staff of the commission and other people gathered at the scene to watch the raging fire doing damage to the property within the office.

The fire inside the Anambra State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, started at about 2:10 pm.

The fire allegedly started from a container bearing election materials dispatched to the centre earlier.

Attempt to speak with the Anambra INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Nkwachukwu Orji could not yield any result as he did not take his call, nor did the Public Relations Officer of the Commission, Leo Nkedife responding to calls put across to his phone.

The media gathered that part of the materials in the container are card readers to be used for Saturday’s election.

Update please:

But the head of Public Relations Unit and voter education of the commission, Leo Nkedife confirmed the fire incidence, saying that he has also been told so.

“I am not in the office, but I have been called and told of the fire, and the story is that part of the office that got burnt is containing smartcard readers,” he said.

On the cause of the fire, Nkedife remained mum, insisting that he cannot speak on that for now.
